Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel Fortnight

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel Fortnight

This takes place from Monday 24th March to Friday 4th April. It encourages children and adults to walk, scoot or cycle to school. Our journeys are logged each day and go towards a daily and overall score not just locally, in Northern Ireland, but throughout the UK.

There will be a ‘Walk to School Day’ on Tuesday 1st April followed by a ‘Big Breakfast’ in the school canteen immediately afterwards.  There will be a voluntary collection for Trocaire on this morning at the Canteen doors.

All you need to do is encourage your child / children to cycle or scoot to school every day during the event, and join them on their way – parent and sibling journeys count too!

Safety is very important to St Mary’s PS and we have developed an Active School Travel Policy to help encourage safe travel to school.  The decision as to whether a child is competent to cycle, walk or scoot to and from school safely rests with the parents/guardians.

We would encourage parents/guardians to consider cycling/walking with their children to and from school, encouraging children to wear bright clothes to help them to be seen by road users and helmets for cyclists.

Primary 1 and 2 children should store their bikes or scooters in the fenced area behind Miss Owen’s and Mrs McAneney’s classrooms. P3 and P5 children should lock their bicycles to both sides of the railings at the front of the school. P4, P6 and P7 children can lock their bikes in the Key Stage 2 yard.

For everyone’s safety, children and adults are asked to dismount at the school gates and walk their bikes into and out of the school. We thank you for your  co-operation.
